The book follows her through her final ten minutes and thirty-eight seconds of consciousness as she reflects on her past, including her difficult childhood and her relationships with her chosen family of outcasts. Each chapter of the novel is named after a different stage of brain activity after death, reflecting on the idea that while the physical body may be gone, memories and experiences continue to live on.
