The main character is a thirty-six-year-old portrait painter who lives in Tokyo. After his wife suddenly announces one day that she wants a divorce, he cancels everything and goes on his way. He ends up in a secluded house high up on a mountain and decides to paint landscapes instead of portraits in the future. In the attic of the strange house, he accidentally comes across a painting titled "The Assassination of the Commander". The motif appears to be a brutal murder in the 6th century, but at the same time alludes to Mozart's famous opera Don Giovanni, which was first written at the end of the 18th century. Not long after, an enigmatic IT billionaire gets in touch and wants to commission a portrait.
